Fire damaged photo restoration

Fire and smoke damaged
photographs restored.

House fires and bushfires destroy irreplaceable photographs. If your images have survived — even partially — there is often far more that can be recovered than you might expect.

What I can recover

What fire damage does
to photographs.

Fire affects photographs in several distinct ways. Direct heat causes physical distortion, charring and emulsion damage. Smoke deposits leave dark residue and a characteristic yellowing. Water from firefighting efforts causes additional staining and emulsion lifting. Each type of damage requires a different approach.

The most important factor in what can be recovered is how much of the original image detail remains visible. If faces, key subjects or important details are still recognisable — even partially — there is almost always something meaningful I can do. I'll assess your photographs honestly and tell you what's achievable before any work begins.

For photographs that have been in a fire, I also offer a free initial assessment — just send me a clear photograph of the damaged print and I'll tell you what I think is recoverable.

Types of fire damage I restore
Smoke and soot staining
Heat yellowing and discolouration
Partial charring at edges
Water damage from firefighting
Emulsion bubbling and distortion
Bushfire ash and residue

If you've recently lost photographs in a fire, here's what to do:

1

Photograph the damaged prints with your phone — don't wait for perfect conditions.

2

Send me the photos for a free assessment — I'll tell you honestly what can be recovered.

3

If the originals are salvageable, scan them carefully at a high resolution before any further deterioration.

Note: some fire-damaged photographs may also benefit from physical conservation treatment before or alongside digital restoration. For severely damaged originals, consult the AICCM conservator directory.
