Digital document restoration

Bring damaged and faded
documents back to life.

Old certificates, maps, letters and family documents — digitally restored with the same care and expertise I bring to every photograph.

Please note — I offer digital restoration only. I work from a high-resolution scan of your document to produce a restored digital file, ready for reprinting. I don't handle, repair or conserve physical documents.

If your document requires physical conservation or repair, I'd recommend consulting a professional conservator through the AICCM conservator directory — Australia's peak body for cultural conservation professionals.

The service

Digital restoration for documents that matter.

Old documents carry stories — a birth certificate from the early 1900s, a hand-drawn family map, a letter from the front, a discharge paper signed by a commanding officer. When these become damaged, faded or fragile, the history they hold is at risk.

I work from a high-resolution scan of your document to produce a beautifully restored digital file — removing stains, repairing tears, recovering faded text and imagery, and returning the piece as close as possible to its original state. The restored file can then be reprinted to any size and framed, shared digitally, or archived for future generations.

As with all my restoration work, every project includes unlimited proofing — nothing is finalised until you're completely happy with the result. And you only pay if you're delighted.

What I restore
Certificates
Birth, marriage, death and baptism certificates. Military discharge papers. Academic and professional certificates. The most common document restoration request — and often the most personally significant.
Maps and charts
Hand-drawn family land maps, historical survey maps, nautical charts and illustrated maps. Tears, fold lines, foxing and water damage restored with careful attention to the original draughtsmanship.
Letters and correspondence
Wartime letters, family correspondence, diaries and handwritten documents. Faded ink recovered, damaged areas repaired, and the character of the original handwriting preserved.
Artwork on paper
Pencil drawings, watercolours, ink illustrations and printed artworks on paper. Stains, tears and fading repaired while respecting the medium and technique of the original work.
Other documents
Ship manifests, immigration papers, indentures, newspaper clippings and other historical documents. If it can be scanned, it can likely be restored — contact me if you're not sure.

The process

How it works

The process is straightforward — and your original document never leaves your hands.

1

Send me a snapshot

A clear phone photo of your document is enough for me to assess it and provide a free, no-obligation quote — usually within one business day.

2

Get a high-resolution scan

I'll guide you on how to get the best quality scan — most people use Officeworks or a local copy shop. A flatbed scan at 600dpi is ideal.

3

I restore your document

Expert digital restoration, sensitive to the era and character of the original. Most projects completed within 2–4 business days.

4

You approve a digital proof

I'll send you a preview to review and request any changes. Nothing is finalised — and nothing is charged — until you're completely happy.

5

Receive your restored file

Your high-resolution digital file is delivered on payment — ready to print, frame, share or archive. Archival printing is also available through my printing partner in Canberra.

Scanning tips

Getting the best scan of your document

The quality of the scan directly affects what I can recover. Here are a few simple tips to get the best result:

1
Use a flatbed scanner if possible
For A4 and smaller documents, Officeworks offers inexpensive flatbed scanning. Scan at 600dpi minimum — higher is better for smaller documents or fine text. Save as TIFF or high-quality JPEG.
2
Large format documents need specialist scanning
Officeworks scanners are A4 only. For larger documents — maps, certificates or artwork on oversized paper — you'll need a large format scanning service. These are available at specialist print shops, copy centres and some libraries. Contact me and I'll help you find an option near you.
3
Don't flatten a fragile document
If your document is too fragile to lie flat, a careful phone photograph in good natural light is a better option than risking further damage. I can work with phone photos for the initial assessment.
4
Scan the whole document including edges
Include a small border around the document — don't crop tightly. This gives me the full context of the damage and avoids accidentally cutting off important content.
5
Not sure? Just ask
If you're unsure about any aspect of scanning — or whether your document is too fragile to scan — contact me first. I'm happy to advise before you do anything that might risk the original.

Need physical conservation rather than digital restoration?

Digital restoration produces a restored digital file — it doesn't repair the physical document itself. If your document requires physical conservation treatment — stabilisation, deacidification, repair of the original paper or parchment — you'll need a professional conservator.

The Australian Institute for the Conservation of Cultural Material (AICCM) maintains a directory of accredited conservators across Australia, searchable by location and specialisation.
