Careful editing that doesn’t look edited.
Restoration is about returning a photograph to how it once looked. Editing is about changing what it shows — taking something out, putting something back, or rebuilding what was never captured properly in the first place. It’s different work, but it draws on the same skills: matching light, grain, colour and perspective so closely that the change becomes invisible.
Most editing requests come from a practical need rather than a nostalgic one. A photo is needed for a funeral order of service, and the only good picture of the person has three others standing beside her. A family portrait is going on the wall, and there’s scaffolding across the background. A group shot is perfect except that one person blinked. All of these are solvable, and most are finished within two or three days.
I’ll always tell you honestly whether an edit will work before I start. Some are straightforward. Others — where the information simply isn’t there in the original — aren’t worth attempting, and I’d rather say so than deliver something that looks wrong.
