Bring the colour back
to faded photographs.
Colour photos from the 1960s through to the 1990s are particularly vulnerable to fading — but even severely sun-damaged images can often be brought back to life.
WHY PHOTOS FADE
The science behind fading colour photographs.
Colour photographs from the 1960s to the mid-1980s were produced using dye-based processes that are inherently unstable. Exposure to UV light, heat and humidity breaks down these dyes at different rates — which is why faded photos often have a distinctive pink, orange or blue cast rather than simply losing saturation evenly.
Restoring a faded colour photograph requires more than simply boosting the saturation. I work channel by channel, recovering the specific dyes that have degraded, rebalancing the colour relationships, and returning the image to the warmth and vibrancy it had when it was first developed.
Even photographs that appear almost entirely washed out can often be recovered – there’s usually far more information in the original than is visible to the eye.
