Creased and torn photo restoration

Creases, folds and tears
digitally repaired.

Creased and torn photographs are among the most common restoration requests — and some of the most satisfying to repair. Even severe damage can often be made completely invisible.

The repair

How I repair creases
and tears.

Creases, fold lines and tears are among the most common types of photo damage — caused by improper storage, being carried in wallets or pockets, or simply the passage of time. A well-executed digital repair removes every trace of the damage while preserving the original detail and character of the image.

My technique involves carefully sampling the texture, tone and detail from surrounding areas of the image and using these to seamlessly fill and blend damaged sections. The goal is always a result that looks completely natural — as though the damage was never there.

For tears that have removed sections of the image entirely, I reconstruct the missing areas using context from the surrounding image — sometimes referencing other photographs where faces or key details need to be recreated.
